Os bicos de lacre foram as minhas primeiras aves de gaiola. Um dia, por acidente, encontrei três aves com cerca de 21 dias no chão, o ninho encontrava-se parcialmente destruído e como tinha um casal em casa com cerca de 2 anos de gaiola peguei nas crias e levei-as para casa. Uma das crias como se encontrava já muito débil morreu no dia seguinte, mas para meu espanto, as outras duas nos dias seguintes estavam vivas e de boa saúde. Eu não queria acreditar no iria ver a seguir, os bicos de lacre adultos tinham assumido as duas crias como suas dando comida no bico às mesmas. Foi assim que tudo começou, ainda hoje recordo este momento como se fosse hoje, dando o mote de partida para o que viria a seguir: a reprodução em cativeiro de bicos de lacre. Passados 3 anos iniciei um ciclo de experiências, que ainda hoje perdura com os estrildas astrilds.

Waxbills were my first birds. One day, by accident, I found three birds,  about 21 days in the ground. The nest had been partially destroyed. Since i had a couple at home about 2 years in captivity, i caught the chicks and i took them home. One of the youngs  was already very weak and died the next day, but to my surprise, the other two in the following days were alive and well. I did not want to believe in what i would  see , the adults adopted the two chicks, feedind them. This is how it all began, still remember this moment as if it were today, this was the point of departure for what was to come: the reproduction in captivity of waxbills. 3 years later, i  started a cycle of experiences, which still remains with  Estrilda astrild.
